Peter Olson is the U.S. Representative for Texas's 22nd congressional district, serving
since 2009. He is a member of the Republican Party.
Peter received a B.A. in computer science from Rice University. He received his J.D. from
the University of Texas at Austin.
Olson served in the U.S. Navy for nine years. He was assigned as a Naval liaison to the
U.S. Senate and assisted Republican U.S. Senator Phil Gramm. He joined Senator
Gramm's staff in 1998. After Gramm's retirement, Olson was chief of staff to U.S. Senator
John Cornyn. Olson was elected to Congress in 2008. Dick Cheney visited Houston to
raise money for his campaign.
Olson led an attempt to impeach Attorney General Eric Holder. He charged that Holder had
refused to comply with a subpoena issued by the House Oversight Committee and that he
failed to enforce he Defense of Marriage Act (which had been declared unconstitutional)
and mandatory minimum sentencing for low-level drug offenders. In 2018, Olson gave a
speech stating that "[on] September 11th, 2001, 3000 innocent Americans were killed by
terrorists from Pakistan." None of the 9/11 terrorists were from Pakistan. Olson sponsored
a bill that would strictly limit the definition of gender to the person's biological gender
assigned at birth, essentially a declaration of an open season for discrimination against
transgender people.
In July, Pete Olson (R) announced Thursday afternoon that he will not seek reelection in
2020.
