Fred Upton is the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 6th congressional district and has
been serving as a Republican in this office since 1987.
Fred earned a B.A. in journalism from the University of Michigan in 1975.
Upton served on the staff of U.S. Congressman David Stockman and was in the Office of
Management and Budget (OMB) under Ronald Reagan. In 1986 Upton was elected for
Congress and has been reelected ever since.
As a Congressman, Upton co-authored an editorial in the Wall Street Journal saying he
was "not convinced" that "carbon is a problem in need of regulation." He has received more
than $2 million in campaign donations from oil and gas companies and electric utilities. The
Los Angeles Times wrote that Upton "represents one of the biggest threats to planet Earth
on planet Earth." He voted to repeal Affordable Care Act, arguing that it should never have
been passed without strong bipartisan support. He voted to ban federal health coverage
that includes abortion. He opposes most gun control legislation and received an A rating
from the NRA. He proposed a Constitutional amendment to restrict marriage to one man
and one woman and supported Trump’s ban on transgender individuals serving in the
military. He condemned comments by Trump calling on four Congresswomen to "go back
and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."
Upton is married and has two children. His grandfather was co-founder of the Whirlpool
Corporation. Michigan Radio reported his net worth as $7.3 million.
