Hunter (R-Calif.), who retired from Congress after fourteen terms. As a Congressman Hunter is anti- abortion and believes life begins at conception. In 2018 Hunter filed to run for a sixth term; although his campaign was predicted to be more challenging than usual due to an ongoing FBI campaign funds investigation. In August 2018 a federal grand jury of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California indicted Hunter and his wife on charges of wire fraud, falsifying records, campaign finance violations, and conspiracy. The San Diego U.S. Attorney’s Office accused the couple of conspiring to misuse $250,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses, as well as filing false campaign finance reports. On the same day, the committee released the Office of Congressional Ethics report, which stated: "Rep. Hunter may have converted tens of thousands of dollars of campaign funds from his congressional campaign committee to personal use to pay for family travel, flights, utilities, health care, school uniforms, and tuition, jewelry, groceries, and other goods, services, and expenses.” Hunter says he has repaid the money back to the campaign, and he has denied wrongdoing. He also announced that his wife no longer receives a $3000/month salary for consulting the campaign.
