Hillary grew up Grand Rapids, the daughter of an elementary school teacher and a reporter and editor for the Grand Rapids
Press.
As a youth, Hillary led a kids summer program at Mel Trotter Ministries, a non-profit that helps homeless women and their
children (among others) get back on their feet. She earned a degree in social work and became a case worker for the Aids
Action Committee, where she helped members of the LGBTQ+ community who faced housing discrimination. After, she earned
her law degree and then clerked for the U.S Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and later worked for the Department of
Justice (DOJ) under the Obama Administration. Most recently, she joined the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center to work on
cases from the growing immigration crisis and served as a volunteer attorney for Times Up Legal Defense Fund, an organization
that provides legal service to women who face sexual harassment in the work place. She lives in Grand Rapids with her
husband Jesse and two sons.
